How Does She Do It? 10 Do's and Don'ts when Balancing Family and DIY

If I had a penny for every time someone has asked me "How do you do it?" well.. I would have a lot of pennies. People, especially other moms of young kids, always want to know where I find time to run a blog, remodel my house, and decorate for every holiday.

And the truth is that it has taken me a lot of trial and error to find the right balance.. and it is still a work-in-progress. As the kids grow up and their needs change, so does the way I deal with balancing home improvement, craft projects, my blog and my family. But over the five+ years I've written this blog, I have learned a lot of tricks for finding where the balance lies, what works and what doesn't (at least for me) and by now I'm acutely aware of the pitfalls to watch out for.

If you have children at home and just can't figure out how to get any crafting, decorating or DIY projects done I want to share some advice with you. Since you don't need to put off DIY projects until your kids are "older." You may not be as efficient as someone without little ones under foot, but you still *CAN* accomplish a lot, with these strategies.

5 Do's and Don'ts for Balancing Family and DIY'ing

One Day My Tree Won't Be Ugly, But I Will Be Heartbroken

Today’s post isn’t going to be one that drives thousands of views with its eye-candy images or breathtaking decor.

It isn’t going to be filled with beautiful vignettes and awe-inspiring holiday decorations that belong in the pages of a magazine.

It isn’t one that you are likely see on a lot of other blogs, since it isn’t the type of post that most design bloggers would want to share.

But today’s post comes from my heart.
Today I want to share my cheesy plastic ornament-filled, terrible pop-culture referencing, asymmetric, overloaded, unmatched and down right UGLY Christmas tree.
Personalized christmas tree
"Wait?! What!?"  You are probably thinking.  "Why would we want to read about that? Nobody wants to see the Walmart of christmas trees when everyone else is giving us the cover of Martha Stewart Living!”

DON’T LEAVE JUST YET!! Let me explain:

2015's Word Of The Year: Yeah.. I've Got One

So, once again this year, the blogosphere is all aflutter with this whole “Word Of The Year” thing. This is where you choose a word which symbolizes your goals and hopes for the coming year.  Sort of an alternative to a resolution.. a yearly motto.

Now this is not to be confused with the Oxford Dictonary’s Word of the Year, which was recently selected at the end of 2014. Every year the dictionary people choose a word or phrase that has gained popularity and become more common in public usage over the past 12 months.  They aren't the same words of the year.

You will understand why you don’t want to mix these two up when I tell you the Oxford folks chose “Vape” as their 2014 word of the year. As much as I’m sure “quitting smoking” makes quite a few resolution lists every year.. I can’t imagine the type of person who would choose “Vape” as their annual mantra.
Well.. maybe I can...

Now where was I?

Oh yeah.. MY word of the year.  Right.

Originally I wasn’t sure if I was going to do a post on it, because I haven’t done it in the past, but I asked about it on my Facebook page and a few people said “why the hell not?” and so I thought I’d listen to them.
Facebook
(Lesson here: If you want to influence content on this blog.. pipe up on Facebook! No complaining that this post is stupid if you didn’t vote! )

I thought about it for a little while.. (not too long, because, come on, let’s get serious here.. I have better things to do with my time) and decided upon...

Wait for it...

Advice to New Moms: It Isn't The Big Things You'll Remember

The days are long but the years are short

There has been a huge numbers of DIY bloggers having babies lately.  I would link up to a bunch of them, but I fear leaving someone out (and nobody wants their newborn left out.) Just trust me when I say.. there are a LOT OF NEW BABIES in blogland!

So for today's Flashback Friday post, I thought I would share a bit of advice as an ‘experienced’ mom who has gotten through the baby stages three times and lived to tell about it.

This isn’t going to be a preachy “spare the rod, spoil the child” open-letter kind of advice post, since I hate those.  Instead I want to share ONE thing I learned about motherhood after my first child was about two years old, and it has changed my perspective about EVERYTHING.

Ready?  Here it is:

What I've Learned By Hitting (and Missing) My Blogging Goals: January In Review

January was a whirlwind month for me.  I am going to do a round up of all my projects at the end of this post.. so if you are looking for projects, feel free to scroll on down.  But first I wanted to take a little time to write about some things that have been weighing on me lately.

Earlier in the year, I set out some goals for myself (both for the blog and personally) and I wanted to use this time to reflect on how well things are going and if I need to make changes.  I found that looking back on what I set out for myself not even 30 days ago has really opened my eyes to things I like and don't like about my blog and how it is influencing both my personal and online life.

First, on the blogging side:
  1. Find my voice
Ironically this post is actually in response to this exact goal.  Normally I would never have written this out for you to read.  I always have focused on PROJECTS PROJECTS PROJECTS (since hey.. this isn't Dr. Phil) but since my new goal is to be more real, I decided to share my feelings with you.

The blog community is changing, and not 100% for the better (in my opinion.) I feel like there is a lot of great chatter out there, but unfortunately, it is all getting eaten up by the fast frenzy that is social media and Pinterest.  It is starting to feel like you are only as good as you latest and greatest project.  You can have a post go viral, and have thousands of views, and dozens of new facebook fans.. Your instagram account may blow up.. but in a flash it is over.  Everyone moves on to the next great project.. and you are left feeling (I don't know a better word): used.

And I will admit, I am just as guilty of it as anyone else.  I have hundreds of blogs in my reader.  I get notified of at least 100-150 new posts EVERY.DAY.  And of course I don't read them all.. I skim the titles, maybe join a linky party or two, stop by a couple which catch my eye, pin a few projects, mark the rest as read.. and move on.

And it seems like a lot of blogs are going that way.  With readers picking out the highlights, and not really developing a 'relationship' with bloggers like we would have before.  Jennifer at Rambling Rennovater said it best in her epic ode to blogging:
There is a lot of noise in my life that detracts from the joy of blogging. Each new person I follow on Twitter or Instagram, each blog that I add to my reader, deflects my attention from what is already there. We live in a society where more is better. Where more subscribers makes you a more successful blogger and more Facebook fans makes you more influential.

But we know the numbers are not the whole truth - even if the social media marketers and brand sponsors try to convince us otherwise.
That is why I think a post like this is important even though it is never going to make it to Pinterest. (Heck, it probably will barely get read), but it shows you the 'real' me.  I am more than just my projects.. My blog can't be boiled down to one pretty picture on a Pinterest board.  There is someone behind it, who struggles to keep a good balance.

I often find myself falling into the trap of spending more time promoting my content, than actually working on my content.. and often that is to the detriment of my family.  In the struggle to make myself heard, I am spending time away from the things I should be focusing on.

Heather Lynne from Raising Memories really struck a nerve with me when she re-focused her blog and re-prioritized her blogging career. She wanted to limit the amount of time she was spending on her blog vs. spending with her family... and I definitely understand that. Ultimately, Heather Lynne didn't feel successful, and decided to completely step away from her blog for the month of February.  (A move I completely understand and respect. I applaud her for doing it, since it is quite courageous to do so.)  She took drastic action in hopes of getting a dramatic result and I truly hope that it works for her and she can come back to find the right balance.

I have begun to find that my blog is defining me.  I look at the world though the lens of my blog.. "Wow! That would be a great project for the blog" or "This recipe is really good, I wonder if I should blog about it.."  I see something cool and immediately take a photo for instagram, or tweet about it.  People are now immediately associating me with my blog.  My friends and family are constantly giving me ideas, and I love to share my successes with them.

But when is it all too much?  When do you start losing who you are and start being nothing but "that blogger"? That is a hard line to define sometimes, which is why I am in awe of Heather Lynne and  her ability to pull the plug and step away.  I feel like if I did that, I would be missing an actual piece of myself.  But I do think I need to work on my moderation.  I know like I am constantly saying that (and have been since 2010) but I still haven't gotten a handle on it.

Which leads me to:
2. Get more organized with my social media
Notice I didn't say "Spend more time on social media"? Since that is definitely NOT the goal.  I want to work smarter not harder.  I won't lie.. I want my blog to be successful, so I will have to play the 'social media game', but I have to always remember that my job is not social media.. my job is BLOGGING.

Ironically, I do think I have been doing much better with this goal this month.  I am engaging with a lot of people (especially on Facebook.)  The problem with the book of face, is how it screens out what people see.  So although I love being myself over there and sharing things with everyone, it is still hard to get to 'know' everybody like I wish I could.
I have been having a little more fun on Instagram, and of course twitter (which comes in fits and spurts) and I am finally dipping my toes into the waters of Google+.   I also have been much better about using Pinterest more consistently.
All of this 'promotion' must be working because I had more pageviews in the month of January than I have ever had (since moving to my thekimsixfix.com URL.)

I want to tell you that I am using some social media scheduling apps to make this a lot easier on myself.  I do go through and manually check all my notifications so if you do respond or ask me a question, send me a PM or email I will eventually get back to you.  But understand how I am not always immediately available, even if it seems like I'm tweeting, posting or pinning!

3. Attend Haven and BlogHer 2014
As of now, this is still the plan. I have my tickets for BlogHer.. and am trying to plan my trip to Atlanta for Haven, but there is no big rush.. yet.

4. Introduce Flashback Fridays
I hope you all are enjoying this series. I have been having a blast looking through my old photos when I'm preparing the new posts. I find pictures like this, which melt my heart and remind me of how fast the time is going.
E: Dec 2009
J: Nov 2009
Baby J: Jun 2013
It brings up the same sentiment that I talked about earlier.  And can be summarized best with a quote from my favorite 1980s bad boy:

Those kids are barely recognizable now.  They have grown up so fast.  I want to make sure I am enjoying them in every stage, since one day it will all be over.

Why 2014 Is Going To Be Awesome!

Okay, maybe that title is a little bit of an exaggeration, but it always best to be optimistic!
source
I am not a girl who normally makes New Years resolutions, and this year will not be an exception to that rule.  However, in 2014 I do need to get my act together.  I was barely keeping up with the holidays last year, and in order to get everything done I had to put some things on the back burner that shouldn't have been. That was my bad.

I need to get organized, get focused and PRIORITIZE.   I have certain projects that have been on my "To Do" list for a long time.  2014 is the year I am going to knock them out!

I've been having a much harder time finding the time to do some of the bigger projects now that the baby is getting older and napping less.  Those big blocks of time are gone, and so I am really confined to DIYing during the nights and weekends when my husband is home to help with the kids. With the limited time in the day I can't be goofing off!

Therefore, in 2014 I want to try to be a little more accountable. I'm going to share with you my top 5 "to do" items in three categories (Home Improvement, Blogging and Personal Life).  My intention is to focus on getting these projects done this year, to make them a priority.

Home Improvement Project Priorities

1. Master Bedroom Complete Overhaul
Right now the master bedroom is still the way it was the day we moved in.
I would love to start from scratch in there (like I did with the baby's nursery) and deal with some of the quirks of that room (like not originally having doors!)
I think this will be my most difficult project in this category.
2. Sewing Studio Complete Overhaul
I have at least started this room.
But there is an entire wall of oak that needs to be tackled.  I would LOVE to an awesome ceiling treatment on those vaulted ceilings.  Oh.. so many possibilities.

3. Finish Stairway Makeover
I am happy with how my stair bannister makeover came out, but the oak risers on those steps have been driving me batty.  In 2014 I vow to paint those suckers!

4. Update the Girls' Bedroom
This one may seem strange, since I have had a big reveal of the 'after' of the girls' room, but you have to remember that was back when my (now) 4 year old was in a crib.
Since then we got a big bunk bed and rearranged a lot of the room.  The girls still love it, but it could use a refreshing.  Not a major project, but still something I need to actually focus on or it is never going to get done.

5. Update ALL the brass hardware in the house
Right now I am living in a hodge podge world of original brass, some spraypainted brushed nickel, and even a few oil rubbed bronze knobs on the doors.
I have told myself for more than a year that I have to pick one color and finish them ALL.  But I just haven't gotten around to it.

Blog Improvement Projects

1. Find my voice
I have been working on trying to make the blog feel more like a conversation and less like a school lecture.  I don't think my goofy personality is coming out enough sometimes.  It has been a balancing act of writing where it is clear that I know what I'm talking about (and you can take me seriously), while also making it fun to read.
If you want the 'everyday' version of Kim, you should definitely find me on facebook, instagram and twitter (and even Pinterest) since that is where I goof off the most.  (And heck, with a username like Kimb0Bimb0 would you expect any less?)

2. Get more organized with my social media
This goes along with goal number 1.  If I can't be a dorkball here, I will definitely be a dorkball there.. but I have to make it easier for you to find me.
I need to get much better at using those platforms to connect with you people.  I am often on twitter in the wee hours of morning, when everyone is asleep.  Being in the Pacific timezone isn't helping either (plus I have to avoid Downton Abbey spoilers!)  I am hoping by having a decent strategy (and not my current "oh hey.. look.. twitter.. cool!") I can be a more regular presence.

3. Attend Haven and BlogHer 2014
Haven Alum
Like.. duh.  This one will be super easy.

4. Introduce Flashback Fridays
This is something I have been thinking of for a long long time, and of course I didn't ever do it.   Because my blog is 4 years old, there are a TON of old posts that need to be re-vamped and brought back to life.   I have an entire kitchen makeover that has barely seen the light of day.
So every Friday I want to revive an old post.. Clean it up, make it pretty again. (Wow, I am starting to sound like the Rehab Addict!)

5. Reply to comments.. really
I know I have been a slacker about this. I love ALL the comments that get left on my blog.  When my email alerts *ding* I get so excited.
I haven't been good at responding because, well, I don't know why.  It was just something that fell to the bottom of the list (it was above ironing and washing windows however!)  So again I say: 2014! It will be the YEAR OF THE COMMENT REPLY!

Personal Life Improvement Priorities
1. Take better care of myself
2. Take better care of myself
3. Take better care of myself
4. Take better care of myself
5. Take better care of myself
The one thing I really really really want to work on this year is eating better, getting more sleep, maybe even start running again.  I think one of the big reasons I have been so frazzled lately, is because I just don't feel AWESOME.  I don't necessarily feel BAD, but I know I could feel better.
Again it comes down to priorities.  For some reason I can find plenty of time to watch a 5 hour marathon of House Hunters (my favorite show EVER!) but I can't take 20 minutes to get my eyebrows waxed. (Okay.. full disclosure.. I actually get my eyebrows threaded.  It totally lasts longer!)

I also haven't lost my baby weight yet (not for lack of NOT trying.. seeing as how I am currently eating this.. and this.. and this.. well, you get the idea.)

For inspiration I found this cool website that lets you made a virtual model of yourself at your current and goal weight.  I wanted to share the "before and after" me.
Now.. I just have to make the AFTER a reality! No problem.. right?

Hey.. remember what I said about being OPTIMISTIC!

Here is looking forward to 2014!
BRING IT ON!

Building Confidence with Cake: Hers and Mine

I often forget how much my children can do completely on their own.. it is much more than I give them credit for.  I find myself hovering over my kids, often frustrated, worried that they aren't going to do something "right" or that they are going to need help or will take too long.  I find myself quick to jump in. Taking over a task before they are given enough time to work though the difficulty they are having and to complete the job on their own.

It can be scary to give them the control. To let them make the decisions, even when you know if they "just did it my way" things would be easier or come out better.  Letting go and accepting that no matter how it comes out, unless they ASK for help, I am going to let them fail (or more likely) succeed completely on their own is nerve wracking.

But children also need a chance to prove they are capable and responsible. It is only when you let them do something for themselves, that they really gain confidence in their own abilities.

As my kids get older, I have to face the fact they will need me less and less.  It is my job to teach them how to do something, so I will no longer have to do it for them.  The goal is for them to go out  into the world capable and confident.  It doesn't matter if it is riding a bike or doing a project at Home Depot, I want them to believe in themselves and at least try their best.  They don't have to be afraid.

Sometimes I help build their confidence by involving or featuring them in one of my DIY projects, but today I found another opportunity.. in the form of CAKE.

A week ago I posted some "ugly" cupcakes on my photo blog that my kids made with the leftover supplies I had from one of my own cake projects.  They had so much fun doing it that my eldest daughter was begging to make her very own full sized cake.

I hesitated at first, just thinking about the mess and the hassle. I wasn't sure she would be able to do it.  What if she failed? What if she got frustrated? I didn't want to let go of the control.  But she was insistent that she could do it and so excited about it.

We went to the store and picked out a boxed strawberry cake mix and tub of pre-made white frosting (her choices) and came back home and started baking.

She read the box and followed the instructions (double checking with me that she had the measurements correct and asking for help to get it in and out of the oven.)

My daughters have helped me in the kitchen quite a bit in the past.  They aren't strangers to baking. Standing by my side cracking the eggs, adding the ingredients, mixing the batter and licking the bowl.  Therefore I wasn't surprised she sailed though the first part of the project.

Baking a cake is one thing.. but decorating a cake was another story.  This is something my 7 year old has never attempted on her own.

First she decided that she wanted a blue, green and purple color scheme.  I helped her split the icing into 3 batches and she colored them using food color.  Since we didn't have purple she had to mix red and blue and although the color was really more of grey-purple she was still excited about her choices.  I had to bite my tongue since I would have chosen a different color, but I reminded myself that this was her cake.

She did a great job piping the edges and drew a flower in the center:

At this point I thought she did a great job.  Heck, I have seen a LOT worse on CakeWrecks (at least her flower is edible).  Of course, she wanted more! You did see those cupcakes didn't you?

So she painstakingly sorted pink and yellow decorating chips and added them to every.single.piped flower.

Talk about persistence! I never would have taken the time to do that.

A few more sprinkles just for good measure:

And of course.. if you look closely you can see her initial just to the top of the flower (every artist must sign their work!)

Is it the cake I would have chosen to make? No.
Is it still beautiful and wonderful? Of course.

I admit I was surprised (and impressed) by how little help she needed.  My fears were all unfounded.  My little girl is growing up and I have to give her more chances to prove it to me, and to herself.

I am not sure who learned more with the experience:  My 7 year old, who now knows just a little bit more about baking a cake..
Or me.. who knows a lot more about letting go.

As I was writing this up I stumbled upon this old post (and this one, and this one and this one) and I realized just how much I blog about cake.  Sorta fitting don't ya think?

I'm sharing this post here.

How NOT to Install Undercabinet Lighting

I'm taking a break from the master bathroom renovation to share a little project I attempted that could only be classified as a total FAIL.  If any DIY'r tells you they have never had a disaster project they are lying.  This is just one of many I have had, and I thought I would share it with you since I don't want anyone to think that everything always goes smoothly.

The last project I had lined up for my kitchen makeover was to install undercabinet lighting.  I really wanted to do this because I wanted to accent the pencil tile backsplash I did all that work installing.

This is how the backslash looks with just the overhead lighting from the recessed LED and pendant fixtures I installed:

It wasn't horrible, but a little task lighting would be nice.  When I ran across these guys at Costco for only 29$ I thought I had found answer.  No wiring, and they were motion activated.  Perfect:

Unfortunately when I installed them I HATED how they looked.  The light was really blue and made the cabinets look yellow and the backsplash look a sickly shade of green:

The other problem was the motion sensor was USELESS.  You could jump up and down in front of the cabinets and they wouldn't go off, but if the cat rolled over from the other side of the room, and they would light up out of the blue.  I could turn them off and on with the little switch on each unit, but to light up my whole countertop that would require hitting 8-10 little switches.  Not exactly practical.

Thank goodness Costco has a great return policy because I took them down and took them back.  I decided to go with my original plan to use Kelly's (from View Along the Way) LED reel lights.  I have ordered all the supplies and will be installing them soon, using the extra outlet above my microwave.

Live and learn!  Hopefully the next attempt will be much smoother!
