DIY Outdoor Drink Stakes

Diy scrap wood drink caddyScrap wood drink caddy
I’m pretty excited about today’s build because
1. It uses only scrap wood.
2. It went together super fast (like one afternoon.)
And 3. It involves holding my drink..  We can pretty much all agree the a cold beer or glass of wine close at hand is ESSENTIAL to summertime happiness.

Simple Sangria Recipe

Hey y'all!  Mandee from The Kitchen Wife here and I love getting together with my girlfriends.  Whether it's book club, planner group, or just a Friday night, you can bet that a great bottle of wine will probably be involved.  But sometimes you just want to shake things up.  That is why I love this Simple Sangria Recipe.

I love that it uses everyday ingredients that you probably already have around the house and it can be thrown together in no time.  I can't wait to share it with you so...

Let's Get Started!

How to Make Your Own Sparkling Juice

How to Make Your Own Sparkling Juice. Perfect alcohol free Champagne alternative. Give a toast without getting toasted! With New Year's Eve on the horizon, I wanted to share this quick trick for making your own sparkling juices to use either as a non-alcoholic Champagne alternative for the non-drinkers or as a great fizzy addition to mixers.

My kids LOVE sparkling ciders and juices, but they can be pricey if you buy them in the grocery store. They can be $3-$4/bottle which is only about 16 oz.  That is only a few glasses worth.

I have figured out a few ways to make my own for less than half that cost.

Pomegranate Holiday Sparklers

Serving pretty cocktails at your holiday parties is always a fun way to personalize and customize the experience.  You can serve them with appetizers before dinner, or right along side the main meal, cocktails (and their alcohol free counterparts “mocktails”) don’t have to be hard to create or require a ton of ingredients.

Very similar to the cranberry-based Cosmopolitan, a pomegranate martini (or Pomtini) is a tart and sweet drink with a touch of acidity.   It only typically contains 3 ingredients:  Vodka, Pomegranate Juice and Orange Liqueur.

Because the holidays are already loaded with excessive calories, I’ve modified this recipe from from the traditional alcoholic version, by removing the alcohol and replacing it with 7UP.   Not only can 7UP replace the Vodka, but it also brings the citrus flavors of the orange liqueur. That means this mocktail only includes 2 ingredients:

Cafe de Miel: Coffee with Milk and Honey

Cafe de Miel: Coffee with Milk and Honey. A spanish and french coffee house speciality, with the perfect blance of rich creamy sweetness

If you have followed my blog (or found me anywhere on social media) you know I am a hard core coffee drinker. And whenever I travel I love to try all the different versions of local coffee drinks.

Every country has their speciality, or at least an interesting flavor variation.  From strong dark Italian espressos to the light creamy German Milchkaffee or French Cafe Au Lait there are so many wonderful ways to drink coffee.. and today’s recipe is no exception.

How To Get Any K-Cup To Work In The Keurig2.0

Use Any KCup in Keurig 2 0If you follow me anywhere on social media you are probably well aware of my coffee obsession.  If Starbucks had a ‘Platinum Member’ status, I would qualify.
(Shameless plugs:  Facebook  Twitter / Pinterest / Instagram / Google+  )

I drink so much coffee, I have not one, but TWO recent projects that involve my multitude of leftover K-cups.

Because of this (probably unhealthy) obsession with coffee, last year the fine people at Keurig sent me a Keurig2.0 to play with and test out.  The big “claim to fame’ of the 2.0 is that it not only brews single serving K-Cups, but it also brews full pots of coffee.  That is the “2.0” part of this machine.  But this post isn’t really a review of the 2.0.  I don’t love it enough to plug it here. This is more of a ‘hack’ to get around one of the biggest drawbacks this new version has.

SNICKERS Or Starburst Creamsicle Milkshakes

Today’s post is actually TWO recipe posts in one.  And if you like milkshakes, you are in for two times the treat!

We are big football fans (both college and professional.. I mean, who else decorates their mantel for football season?)  This year, as a special treat on game day I decided to create milkshakes for the kids.

Frozen Strawberry Moscato Granitas: A Perfect for Summer Treat

Strawberry moscato granitas

I don’t know about where you live, but here in Northern California the warm weather is officially starting!  It is HOT HOT HOT.  I posted this on Instagram last week.  This was the car, sitting in the garage, IN THE SHADE.
Hot car temperature
Needless to say, we have been spending plenty of time at the pool.

Typically when a group of us get together we like to unwind with frozen cocktails, like margaritas, but since we are so close to the Napa Valley, wine cocktails and mixers (like Sangria) are becoming more and more popular.

To mix it up a little, I thought I would try a recipe that would integrate the sweet fruity flavor of Moscato into a frozen treat.  I love the idea of a granita because it is a hybrid of “cocktail” and “dessert” since you don’t really drink it, but rather eat it with a spoon.
Moscato granita
Plus it only uses THREE INGREDIENTS and doesn’t require anything special in terms of equipment.

You can make Granitas with pretty much any fruit, a little sugar, some Moscato and water.   In this case I went with strawberries because they were on sale.
Three ingredient granita

Frozen Strawberry Moscato Granitas:

2 cups water
1/2-1 cup sugar (less if you don’t like sweet, more if you want it your granita to taste a store bought frozen slushy)
1 cup  White Moscato
1 1/2 cup sliced strawberries (about 1/2 pound of whole berries)

Please keep in mind that you must be 21 years or older to enjoy this frozen treat.  Like anything containing alcohol, please consume it in moderation and NEVER drink and drive.

Clean and slice up your berries.

In a small sauce pan add you water, sugar and the berries and heat until the sugar is completely dissolved and the berries have softened slightly:
Strawberry sugar water
Take this mixture and add it to a blender (you can wait for it to cool off or not.. I was in a rush so I added it warm):
Strawberry syrup
Blend the mixture pretty well until is is smooth:
Strawberry pureeRemember if you are blending hot liquid to always hold the lid down with a dishtowel over your hand. The blended mix may get a little foamy and that is okay.

Add your Moscato and give the blender one or two quick pulses to incorporate the wine. Pour the mixture into a shallow freezer proof dish (Metal is recommended but I used ceramic since none of my metal pans would fit in my freezer):

If you are worried about the smoothness of your blended strawberry mixture you can strain it though a sieve. I didn’t but I don’t mind the seeds or little chunks.  For a smoother granita you should strain it.
Throw you pan in the freezer for a few hours:
Freezing granita
When it is frozen (and it won’t be super super solid because the sugar and alcohol prevent it from becoming a rock) use a fork to scrape across the surface.  You want to form flaky ice crystals:
Scraping granitas
I then used an ice cream scoop to serve the fluffy ‘shavings’ in a shallow glass:

Or even a regular old high ball glass works great.. just add a sliced strawberry on the side to garnish: Strawberry wine granita
If you wanted to mix it up a little, you could also try some of the new varietals, like the peachy flavor of the Pink Moscato paired with peaches or orange juice, or the berry flavors of the red moscato with raspberries or even pomegranates.

After scraping the frozen granita mix with a fork, the shavings can be stored in the freezer for up to 24 hours. A perfect way to prep a dessert in advance for a party, since it only requires scooping to serve.

ZeFronk's Watermelon Slush (and Popsicles!)

I don't normally get my recipes from an animated Disney Jr. character, but the kids insisted we give this one a shot.
If you don't know who ZeFronk is, let me introduce you.  He is a wiener-dog with a French accent that cooks "taste-zee treats" with his assistant Sue (a bird.)  He spends a lot of time avoiding his nemesis, a cat named Dom, who tries to steal the finished products.
Source: Disney
The actual episode for "Zee Thai Watermelon Slush" isn't available, but here you can watch ZeFronk making Banana-Berry Smoothies (which is pretty much the same idea):

Just a word of warning.  The theme song will get stuck in your head!

The kids insisted that they recalled the recipe for Watermelon Slush, so we made it from their memories.
We used 2 cups of watermelon and about 3/4 cup of crushed ice.
(The actual recipe also calls for 1 Tbsp honey, but our slushes were already really sweet, so we didn't add any.)

Blend the ice in a blender and then add watermelon and mix until slushy.
Serve immediately.

The resulting slush tastes pretty much like watermelon (shocker I know!)
We had quite a bit of it left over and so we decided to turn the leftover slush into popsicles. We got this really nice mold set at Ikea. I like that you can take each individual mold out and run it under water to release the popsicle.  And it was only $1.99!

The popsicles were definitely a just as big of a hit as the slushes!

Thanks ZeFronk!
