Turn an old thrift store frame into a distressed chalkboard

Chalkboard from an old thrift store frame Hi guys! It’s Meg from Green With Decor back with another fun DIY project.

I love going to thrift stores and yard sales and picking up old pieces. Sometimes I’m not even sure what I’m going to do with something when I buy it, but it’s fun to have a little stash of ‘treasures’ in the basement for when inspiration strikes.

I bought an old frame a while ago and wasn’t quite sure what to do with it.

With a bit of clay paint and some chalkboard paint, here it now:

This is a fun little DIY, plus you can switch out the message throughout the year so you're always prepared for whatever holiday is coming up.
Supply list:
·      Old frame (with ridges if you want to replicate this exact look)
·      Paint for the frame
·      Chalkboard paint
·      Paint brush
·      Foam brush
·      Chalk

Take the frame apart so you can paint the frame and the glass insert separately.

The frame started this dark blue/gray color:

I was planning to paint the whole frame this beige color, but as I was painting it, the beige played really well with the blue.

The ridges on the original frame meant not all of the beige paint soaked into the frame right away. I loved the distressed look of it (without having to actually distress it) and decided to leave it semi-painted instead of covering the entire thing.

(Along with not always knowing what I’m going to do with my random thrift finds, sometimes I also change direction part way through a project. It’s part of the fun of DIY-ing!)

Use a foam brush to apply the chalkboard paint. Brush chalkboard paint across the glass insert using only horizontal strokes, covering the glass completely.

Let it dry completely or you’ll ruin the first coat of paint. Then brush chalkboard paint across it again, this time using all vertical strokes. Make sure the entire glass piece is covered with the black paint.

Let the glass dry overnight.

Put the frame back together. Then rub the entire chalkboard piece with chalk and wipe it off.

If you skip this step and write something on it right away, it will be really hard to erase whatever you first wrote on there.

Then use your chalkboard to write whatever you want! Kim has some clever Valentine’s Day ideas here.
