Handprint Teacher "Thank You" Quilt

Today is the last day of Kindergarten! I can't believe I have a first grader.
As a thank you gift for the end of the year, I volunteered to make a quilt for the teacher on behalf of the whole class.  (As a personal gift just from E I also gave her a School's Out for Summer Gift Basket. )
I have been working on the quilt since April. I blogged about it here and here  previously.  This is where I left off:

Honestly, since those last posts I hadn't really worked on it.  Until last night!  I quickly rushed to get it done, I added borders, quilted it, bound it and added a label.  And here is the finished product:

I actually wrote the poem I used on the label myself (after being inspired by a bunch of different variations on the internet:)
This past year we have done so many things
hand-in-hand with you.
Reading, writing, painting, drawing,
and learning something new.

Our dirty little handprints
we left on every wall.
And on the drawers and table tops,
we really marked them all.

The years will pass so quickly
and we'll soon be grown ups too.
And all our little handprints
will surely fade from view

But here are some that won't rub off.
We're giving them to you
because we're thankful for a teacher
as wonderful as you.

Because I wanted to present the quilt folded, I printed a paper copy of the label and tied it to the quilt so that I could read the poem when I presented it.
The label is the poem along with some simple clip art and a dedication I put it together in Photoshop.

For the fabric label, I printed it directly onto fabric which had been ironed onto freezer paper.  To fix the ink so that it wouldn't wash off when the quilt was washed, I heat set it with an iron, and then dipped the entire thing in white vinegar.  After rinsing and drying the dye is pretty close to color set.
I am sure she is going to love it, hopefully as much as we love her!

  9. This is beyond fabulous. I have a similar project pinned on pinterest, but it seemed like such an overwhelming project, so I haven't attempted it. My daughter is about to finish Kindergarten (in a few days), too. I'm so impressed- you did a beautiful job!!
