margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"rustic-x-box-christmas-tree-stand.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ESo how did I build it and stay within the rules of the challenge (no new materials.. only use scraps you already have lying around)?\u003Cbr \/\u003EWell, needless to say, I had a ton of pieces of scrap lumber, since I never throw anything away. .\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cimg alt=\"Random scraps of wood\" border=\"0\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-V4-1zVZ-DFQ\/VlOeR6gF_EI\/AAAAAAABezg\/f1SP64ToIrQ\/random-scraps-of-wood.jpg?imgmax=800\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"random-scraps-of-wood.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/\u003EFor me the biggest problem is that they were all random sizes, widths, and even THICKNESSES. \u0026nbsp;I had 2x4s, 1x3s, 1x5s, old pieces of pallets, some fencing, 2x2s, trim boards and a ton of cull lumber that was in bad shape or warped.\u003Cbr \/\u003EAfter standing back and studying my stash I realized I had the most length in the left over pieces of tongue and groove boards I used to make my \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/www.thekimsixfix.com\/2015\/09\/west-elm-inspired-mirror-from-tongue.html\"\u003EWest Elm Inspired Mirror\u003C\/a\u003E. \u0026nbsp;I used the “groove” side and cut off more than half the board with the tongue (the large pieces in the photo below).\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cimg alt=\"\" border=\"0\" height=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-OXV6rJltXzo\/VeKaMS6PclI\/AAAAAAABdV0\/tQvS5VKeRX8\/Ripping-down-2x6-Tongue-and-Groove.jpg?imgmax=800\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"Kreg-RipCut-instead-of-table-saw.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/\u003EOnce again I used my \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/21d5cjE\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EKreg Rip-Cut\u003C\/a\u003E. \u0026nbsp;and it worked great. \u0026nbsp; I was left with “nearly 2x4” boards. \u0026nbsp;(they were more like 2x3.5) \u003Cstrong\u003E\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;Because these boards are cut down by hand, \u0026nbsp;I’m not including measurements for this post.. since none of this is standard lumber.\u0026nbsp;\u003C\/strong\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cimg alt=\"Scrap lumber cut down to build box\" border=\"0\" height=\"411\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-O2cZo-RLTr0\/VlOeXfd5nII\/AAAAAAABez8\/pR8F76fS4nY\/scrap-lumber-cut-down-to-build-box.jpg?imgmax=800\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"scrap-lumber-box.jpg\" width=\"516\" \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENext I had to make the inset boards for the flat areas of the box. \u0026nbsp;I didn’t have enough plywood but I did have LOTS of random boards in various widths. \u0026nbsp; Enter the pocket hole Jig (in this case the \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1leJwmg\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003EKreg K4\u003C\/a\u003E)\u003Cbr \/\u003E\u003Cimg alt=\"Kreg jig for pocket holes\" border=\"0\" height=\"451\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-ua_g2Mpk4Ac\/VlOeMK9021I\/AAAAAAABezA\/b3CncFQ_des\/kreg-jig-for-pocket-holes.jpg?imgmax=800\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"kreg-jig-for-pocket-holes.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003EI laid the boards flat on the ground and attached them side by side with pocket holes. \u0026nbsp;The key was keeping one side FLAT adjacent the floor.. Since the boards were all slightly different thickness the backside of the boards are not level, but that doesn’t matter since it is the inside of the box. \u0026nbsp;Once I had bunch of boards put together, I snapped a line for the correct total width and ripped it down with the \u003Ca href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/21d5cjE\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\"\u003ERip Cut\u003C\/a\u003E.\u0026nbsp;\u003Cimg alt=\"Connecting 1x4 boards with pocket holes\" border=\"0\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-lKU7nh23lMI\/VlOeHlmWzrI\/AAAAAAABeyo\/2FHbXqrLiww\/connecting-1x4-boards-with-pocket-holes.jpg?imgmax=800\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"connecting-1x4-boards-with-pocket-holes.jpg\" width=\"400\" \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ENext I had to insert the panels into the frames. \u0026nbsp;I used blocks to make sure the overhang of the frame was exactly the same for all the boards. \u0026nbsp;Since some of the boards were warped and different thicknesses, once again, it only mattered what they looked like from the outside..\u0026nbsp;\u003Cimg alt=\"Using blocks to level boards\" border=\"0\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/-ZYIOwdSwUTA\/VlOeaH1WbKI\/AAAAAAABe0M\/CVPgInFOsw4\/using-blocks-to-level-boards.jpg?imgmax=800\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" title=\"using-blocks-to-level-boards.jpg\" width=\"600\" \/\u003E\u003Cbr \/\u003ESo you can see the inside is kinda a mess of random boards.
