I have 2 grown kids and that's what I did. I only realized it was working when one time my son went to spend the night with a friend. I had taught him how to make Mexican migas for breakfast and he had helped me make them, but I'd never seen him make them by himself. Well, while he was at his friend's house he woke up before everyone else, went into their kitchen and made migas for everyone that morning (5 people!). The other boy's mother was so impressed that she had my son teach her how to make them, then called me on the phone to compliment me. My son was only 11 yrs old at the time. I really didn't think he'd paid THAT much attention to me to be able to make the dish himself and teach someone else as well. I try to be conscious of it so that he can learn on his own, but it's tough sometimes!

I find the hardest part is when he wants to help us do something, and it does matter if that thing is done correctly/neatly (i.e., painting the baby's room). In those cases, we just try to find some related task he can do, but sometimes it's hard!Alyssa Gilbertnoreply@blogger.com
