Tutorial: Turning Cabinets into Custom Shelves

Since I am redoing my kitchen, but working within a budget and with the cabinets I already have, I needed a way to get a more custom look.  Enter: Open Shelving.

(EDITED TO ADD: Full kitchen reveal can now be found here)
It was a look I had pinned dozen of times on my "Kitchen" Pinterest board, but I didn't want it to look like I just took doors off a cabinet. I wanted it to look CUSTOM.  So I looked around my kitchen and tried to figure out which cabinets I could easily convert yet wouldn't look like doorless cabinet boxes.

I settled on this one, which floats by itself next to the kitchen sink:

It is a single cabinet with double doors that was nothing to write home about:

I got a feel for how it would look by just removing the doors (that way if I didn't like it, I could always just put the doors back on):
I was happy with the look, so I needed to deal with the hardware holes leftover from the hinges:
A couple dollops of spackle (I love the pink kind that dries white) did the trick:
Then I went ahead and removed the center support post (which really isn't "supporting" anything but the doors).  I used a hacksaw to cut it in half and knocked it out with a hammer:
Next up sanding and priming:
A couple coats of paint (yes, this is the Manchester Tan I took forever to decide upon):
Most people would have stopped there, but this doesn't look like much more than an empty cabinet.  I took my inspiration from the open cabinet I loved on Pinterest and found these shelf brackets:
I added them to the top corners of the cabinet and ended up with this:
More spackle and another coat of paint.. but I didn't want to stop there.  My inspiration cabinets also had a beadboard backing.

Now let me pause here to mention how much experience I have with beadboard,   both the snap-in kind as well as the real stuff.. but I think my life is forever changed since I found this:
PAINTABLE Beadboard Wallpaper!! (I got mine on Amazon)

Where have you been all my life?  This stuff is great.  And although I have heard it can't handle a lot of wear and tear (so I wouldn't use it on a bathroom wall for example) it would have been a great solution to my DIY beadboard ceiling.

Anyhow.. I put the paper up in the back of the cabinet, cut it with a box cutter and painted it to match the rest of the cabinet (you could do a contrasting color, and I may change it in the future, but I wanted to try it out this way first):
I caulked around the edges to hide any gaps (and it helped seal the edges of the paper down):
A final coat of paint, re-install the shelves and you are all set!
I decided to add my collection of Lennox serving pieces I got for my wedding.  The cow is a creamer, and the chickens are salt and pepper shakers:
The duck is a teapot, the bunny is a cookie jar, and the pig is a sugar bowl (you scoop out the sugar with his curly tail):
Of course I added my $2 chicken (affectionately named Beyonce) that I couldn't pass up at the thrift store.

And there you have it!  Not too difficult!
Here is what it looks like from a distance.  Not so much like a converted cabinet!

I am super happy with it!

Kitchen Details and A Sneak Peek (Plus My Blogger Girl Crush)

I adore Debbie (of Debbie-Debbidedoos) for a multitude of reasons. First, because she hosts this awesome Copycat Magazine Challenge that I love.  It is so fun to get inspired and make it happen.**
**keep reading for more about this and the teaser photo!

But even more importantly, I love how big of a heart she has and how wonderful she is at helping all us newbie bloggers get a foothold in bloggyland.  She hosts a newbie link party every Monday (for bloggers with less than 100 followers) which I used to join regularly until my follower count got too high (thanks for that by the way.. I love you all!! *Smooches*)
She also features a newbie blogger in the Newbie Spotlight of the Week.
Talk about Newbie LOVE!  Her blog was one of the places I felt most welcome when I first started putting myself out there.

Anyhoo.. now that I have embarassed myelf by fawing over my girl-crush, it is time to get back to the Copycat Challenge.  This go round, the challenge included copying either a magazine photo OR a fellow blogger.

Sooo...  I decided to copy, who else? DEBBIE!  (I told ya' she is my girl crush!)
She actually used this mini-project as an example of the challenge.  She decorated the front panel of her sink base with a little decorative thing-a-ma-bob
Source: Debbiedoos
and then Kathy (of Creative Home Expressions) copied her..
Source: Creative Home Expressions
And now I am copying them both!  (Shhh.. no calling me a suck up!)

You know how I am in the middle of a big kitchen makeover? Well..  these images may give a little of it away.. but not much!    First I started with a freshly painted plain sink base cabinet front:

Then I found this little guy at Lowe's for $3.
Unlike Debbie who used double stick tape, and Kathy that used quake putty, I went for a more permanent solution of liquid nails (GO BIG OR GO HOME!)
I applied it to the cabinet and then I used caulk to seal the edges so you couldn't see a gap behind it:
Then I painted that sucker to match the cabinets and here is what I ended up with:
Cute no?   Especially considering that less than 48 hours ago it looked like this:

I've Settled on a Kitchen Color Scheme!

First, I want to say THANK YOU to everyone who commented about what I should do with my kitchen cabinets!  Your feedback was invaluable!  So many of you had great suggestions, and I took them to heart.

The breakdown of the "votes" (at the time of this post) was:
All Light: 61%
All Dark: 19%
Mix of Light/Dark: 19%

Annnnnd.. the my personal choice is...
ALL WHITE!!
Well, actually.. not white.  Like Cape on the Corner suggested, I settled on a warmer tone.. Manchester Tan by Benjamin Moore.

Here it is (along with some other colors I am contemplating for the walls):
Source
I know it seems really dark, but I have lived with the paint sample taped up to my counter for more than a year.. Against my granite and dark island it doesn't read like a dark tan..

In my previous inspiration post I mentioned that I was in LOVE with pencil tile backsplashes.
Source: Houzz
I knew it was fate when I found this tile at, of all places, Costco
With my coupon it worked out to only $4/square foot!  That is a great deal for pencil tile!  This same tile is $15/square foot at Home Depot!

When I set it all up together I ended up with this:
It is starting to look a lot like my inspiration photo isn't it?

I also am taking the advice from Jule and Zefi and am going to open up a few of the cabinets, by taking off the doors and creating some open shelving.  I love the look of the cabinet in the upper left of this photo.  I think I can knock off the look with some molding and beadboard.

Lastly, I was able to get a great deal on this faucet I originally posted about:
Pfister via Amazon
Everything is falling into place!  I am getting started immediately!

Guest Post: Back to School Shopping on a Budget

Thank you to EVERYONE who has commented over on my quest to find the perfect cabinet paint color.  I promise I will update you all soon on what I decided on.
Today I am stepping away from my kitchen, and am super excited to present my FIRST EVER guest post from a good friend of mine. I know Kia (who blogs at Jeans and A T-Shirt) in real life. In fact, I met Kia at least 2 Money Pits ago!  She never ceases to crack me up.  Kia isn't a DIY blogger, but instead touches on a little controversy, a lot of movies, and things that really matter.  Be warned, she does have a potty mouth, but that is all part of her charm!
Today she is sharing all her secrets to Back-To-School shopping (she has a teenager so she has a lot more experience at that than me.)    Take it away Kia!!

My daughter has been back in school for a few weeks so I've been doing a bit of school supply shopping. Most of my friends know I'm really good at school supply shopping and when there's a really good deal I'll blast it to all of them. Even so i still get questions about how i do it. So Iím going to share some of the ways i save as well as the deal i got recently while making a major school supply purchase.

If you want to spend as little as possible buying school supplies most people will say just wait for the tax-free weekend and get it all then. This is not the best strategy and the amount you save on taxes is probably negated by the lack of some of the better deals.

The school supply shopping season runs roughly  6-9 weeks. During this time is when you see some of the golden opportunity items, like index cards for a penny, 10 pencils for a dime, things like that. These aren't everyday deals you have to work for them. Your prep starts before you even get to the store. This won't take a ton of time! this is not some extreme couponing 50 hours worth of work.

1. Get 2 lists
Yes two. You need the list for your child and the list for the next grade.
If you want to really be ambitious, get the next 2 grades.
Now that you have your lists you can see what you need now and what you will most likely need next year. Some items are standard; pencils for the k-3 group, colored pencils instead of crayons once you hit 4th grade, etc. You'll see the patterns and know that for some items you get double or triple the amount on the list, because its going to last several years. Go ahead and make notes, you really only want to go to the store with 1 list if you want to travel light or if your like me 3 lists in a store means you end up only looking at one and have to go back.

2. Look at multiple store circulars for the items you need every single week
This entire next step shouldn't take you more than 30 minutes per week. Now some people are admittedly Walmart shoppers. There is no love lost between me and Wally World but i know that some people shop there religiously. It has been proven in many other places that they aren't always the lowest prices. In order to save the most possible, you need to have the circulars of Walmart, Target, Office Max, Office Depot and Staples. The last 3 are extremely important. They are in the office supply business and tend to run the best deals hands down. Those penny deals? Almost always at the office supply places. Its their niche go ahead and exploit it. You need these circulars because all these companies price match. Make sure you know exactly what the price matching policy is. Its usually on each of the stores websites and takes roughly a minute to find and 30 seconds to read. This step is important because....

3. Sometimes you have to go to more than one store
Always read the fine print of a sales circular. In some cases you can't price match because the deal will not be honored by the competing stores. This includes, mail in rebates, in store rewards, in some cases you get a free product and other stores will not honor that. In those cases if that store is not out of the way and its something you need go ahead and get it.

4. Plan your shopping over several weeks
If its not in the circular don't buy it, it will probably be cheaper later on. For example the week Target put out their school supply display index cards were about $2 a pack. They did hit a Target sale of 50 cents but they are a penny this week at Staples. When you get your circulars go to the store of your choice and get the items you want, circulars in hand ready to price match. This doesn't have to be a special trip. If you regularly go to Walmart or Target, there you go, get them while you are there. Just don't forget your list and your circulars.

5. Coupons
For some this is a no brainer for others they are saying huh? 3M loves sending me coupons. I see coupons from them and Avery year round. All you have to do is get on their mailing list and they send you coupons and in 3M's case free samples all year.
In addition to coupons direct from the brands the stores frequently offer a XX dollars off your purchase. You have to meet the minimum which sometimes you do, sometimes you walk out the store spending $2 for a bag full of stuff so you don't.

6. Don't forget to do your mail in rebates
Most places nowadays allow you to do your rebate online all you need is the rebate receipt. You know why they offer mail-in rebates? Because most people don't cash them in. I never miss a rebate, its cash why let them keep it?

7. Store loyalty programs
If you have a Target card you get 5% off every single purchase. (Plus a nickel for bringing your own bags), Staples has its own rewards program where you get a check to use on a future purchases. If you get upgraded to premiere as i was the checks have a longer expiration date. This year Staples has a Back to School Savings Pass. This pass costs $10 and gives you 15% off all your in-store school supply purchases from 7/13 -9/17 of this year. There are some exclusions; most noticeable are flash drives and toner, but pretty much everything you would see on a school supply list would be covered. If you have a small or no school supply stock i recommend you purchase it. In my case i passed on it this year. Because of my stock pile i only had to purchase some notebooks and the calculator Iíll tell you about shortly. Just do some mental calculations. If you typically wait till tax free weekend you probably should buy it because then its 15% not less your states sales tax.

Most of my supply storage.
As i mentioned earlier i made a pretty big purchase this week. She's taking Algebra and needs a Ti-84 graphing calculator. I was given the option of buying one of 3 calculators, the Ti-83, Ti-84 plus or Ti-84 plus silver edition. I actually started researching this purchase last year via Step 1. I knew she would need it this year so i started pricing it then. I remembered the cheapest Iíd seen it what time of the season and where.

I ended up purchasing the Ti-84 Plus Silver Edition from Staples. There's a big reason why i got it from Staples who did not have it on sale the week i bought it. The retail price regardless of the store is $129.99. Here's what i did.

On sale at Target that week in circular for $99 (price match)
$50 Staples gift card from laptop purchased last year (no expiration date)
$6 Staples rewards check from recycling ink

   $ 99
    -50
      -6
= $43 + tax

Less than $50 for an item that retails at $130 and the cheapest advertised price i saw last year was $94.

Those were great tips!  I always love to hear about people being as cheap frugal as me.  Thanks so much Kia!  I'm so glad you stopped by The Money Pit!

Here are a few other tidbits about Kia.
Please drop by her blog and say "hi"!

Kia is a mom to a teenager. She spends entirely too much time in her SUV waiting for her daughter or just chauffeuring her around. when she's off driver duty she screens movies. You can usually spot her wearing a sarcastic t-shirt and her iPhone glued to her hand. She blogs at Jeans and a T-shirt and tweets at NotTheCar frequently.

Help Me Design My Kitchen!!

My previous post about staining my island cabinets has gotten the creative juices flowing! In the past I have shown you some of my other kitchen inspiration but it is time to make some hard and fast decisions.

Here is what my room looks like now:
I already know I am going to change the color of the rest of the cabinets, but exactly HOW I am going to do that is a tougher decision. Thank goodness Benjamin Moore has a great "Paint your room" online tool.  You can upload your photo, and select different color schemes.  Here are the three options I am considering:

ONE: I could paint them ALL light.

It would look a lot like this:
Source: Better Homes & Gardens
Source Unknown
I have more examples of this color scheme on this previous post.

TWO: I could stain them all to match the island.
I really like this look.  In fact I LOVE it, but there is only one small window in the kitchen, and that is a LOT of uninterrupted cabinets. I think it would feel like a cave. Although, maybe not. These examples are beautiful:
Source: Kiki's List
Source: My Design Dump
THREE: Light upper cabinets, dark lowers.
The mis-matched cabinet thing is pretty popular right now.  Here are some examples of this look:
Source: Housetweaking
Source: Houzz
Source: Sweet Something Design
So now you understand my dilemma.  They are all beautiful, but  I need to figure out which would work best in my space.
Which one do you like?
One, two or three?
